Taking advantage of the lower excise for sub-four-metre and sub-1.5-litre diesel-engined cars, Skoda has launched the Fabia as a premium hatch right at the top end of the small car market. Excellent fit-and-finish, great ride and sharp steering are only some of the pluses. On the downside is a lack of agility, a noisy and unrefined diesel and that price tag that takes it right into the small saloon segment. A design that seems to take inspiration from the Swift may keep people away.
