Volvo India is expanding. But, not just in terms of number of dealerships, mind you. It is also setto introduce a few niche products in the country to appeal to a wider spectrum of audience and, it doesn't get more niche than the C30; well, at least in Volvo's portfolio, it does not. It's a hatchback with coupe overtones. It's very much a Volvo from the front raised hood ridges, a pronounced snout and near conventional looking rounded-off rectangular head lamps. From the rear though, it's almost like a rock star unconventional, in your face, and pretty adventurous.

The complete glass tailgate, the Christmas tree tail lamps and the bulbous buttocks which might give J Lo an inferiority complex, give it an absolutely stand out presence, no matter who is at the party.

The C30 is also just a two door, which does add to the car's sporty demeanour, but might not be to everyone's liking for its unusual (in the Indian context) getting in and out rituals. Once inside, it's Volvo all the way from the dashboard design to the floating stack which gets dials for the climate control and stereo as well as the multifunctional steering. Safety kit, as is expected from Volvo, is comprehensive too.

Now, the C30 is offered with a choice of eight engines internationally from the entry level 1.6-litre petrol that produces lOObhp to the stonking 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder with 230bhp on tap.

Indian buyers though will have to settle for the former initially. The engine will be coupled to 5-speed manual transmission. The car will be a CBU, and we hope, therefore, that at least two additional engines - a frugal diesel and a spunky petrol, will also be offered.

The C30 will spawn a new seg¬ment taking the hatch concept a frog leap ahead from where the Fabia left it in terms of pricing. We expect, after duties.
