5 is sportier to drive

The 5's seats though, offer better support, even though these are a tad firmer in comparison. And you need it, especially for the sides, because against the E-class which is more prone to roll and under steer, the 5 corners flatter, and has neutral cornering man¬ners too. The steering is more talkative and precise lending the driver better control and feel at speeds. It is, of course, heavier than the E, and might prove to be a little uncomfortable during city crawls.

Meanwhile, both cars essen¬tially use the same engines as their smaller siblings the C-class and 3-series. But, in the BMW's case, the 1995cc engine produces 10bhp more power and lONm of additional torque. The weight difference isn't much between the 3 and 5 either, and therefore, both cars return near identical performance figures.

It's the same story in terms of driveability. The 4-cylinder en¬gine is a refined unit too, and the 6-speed auto it's coupled to, adds to the car's flexibility. It also helps quicker gear changes, especially when shifting down in manual mode.

The E in comparison runs a 5-speed automatic. It's also slower to respond and refuses to play sport come aggressive shifting. The engine in question though is larger but being in the same state of tune as the C-class, the horse power rating is less compared to the BMW. It makes 170bhp.

However, a higher torque rat¬ing ensures the E clocks identical acceleration times, and only lags behind by a bit in top speed.
