View Full Version : Thin tyres always mean less grip

Fitting a wider tyre doesn't always translate into a better handling bike. For example, for the Yamaha RI5, the tyre manufacturer MRF spent months perfecting the tyre to suit the bike. Upsizing on such bikes can actually have adverse effects. Even in local racing championships, all Indian bikes run on sticky but quite thin tyres.

It is the compound, tread and contour of the tyre that determines the grip and not the width. Of course having a three inch rear tyre on a zoodd bhp bike won't do either. Only through a trial and error method can you judge if the bike will handle better with wider tyres. Also keep in mind that a wider tyre will raise the rear and hence try sticking to a lower profile wide tyre to keep the rear down. Remember to upsize on the rim if fitting a wider tyre.
