You could argue that all motorcycle racers are maveri(;ks of some sort. It is a basic requirement of the calling to be unorthodox and independent¬minded. Orthodox people stay at home and watch the telly. Racers get out there and stick their lives on the line because they'd go nuts if they stayed at home in front of the telly.

Racers don't want to run with the herd, some of them may end up riding in the middle of the pack, but they all want to be out in front on their own, doing things their own way, with the rest of humanity struggling along behind them.

To stand out as a maverick among motorcycle racers therefore takes quite a lot of doing. It requires all or most of the following characteristics: bravery verging on the insane, a willingness to tackle challenges from which others would run a mile, an inbuilt drive to do things differently just because you don't want to be like everyone else, a distaste for normality and a deep disrespect for the establishment.

The following half dozen heroes fit the maverick racer template, they are all rebels of one kind or another who have raged against the machine and gone racing in their own inimitable way. Most of all they are exceptional human beings who have given huge entertainment to fans by doing things differently.
