GM's powertrain of the future, the E- Flex uses an electric motor that can be charged at home for a 50-60 km commute, but is supplemented by petrol or diesel poweno extend. the range to up to 1000 km - but the engine only ever charges the batteries, rather than driving the wheels. Showcased in the US as the petrol Volt concept, and shown here as the dieselectric Flextreme stack in which hydrogen and oxygen react to create electrical energy. That energy is then used to drive the car's wheels. The FCX will only be leased, Honda aiming for 200 cars to be supplied over three years in the US.
