Maruti's small car Alto sold over 750,000 units in the domestic market. This is a monumental achievement considering it all happened within 7 years of its launch. The car is available in three variants viz the Alto Standard, Alto Lx and the Alto Lxi. Maruti introduced several variants of Alto to cater to the entry-level buyers. A limited edition Alto "X-fun" edition that coincided with 5 lakh sales became an instant rage. Like all special variants "X-fun" helped to keep the excitement in the brand alive.

Maruti managed to sell the first one lakh Altos in just 37 months of its launch, but then things sped up as sales started to accelerate even faster. Maruti managed to sell the second lakh
of Altos in the next 12 months. The car's rising sales figures clearly indicate that the customers are happy with the car's low maintenance and easy usability. All this made sure the Alto reached a sales figure of 7.5 lakh units within just 7 years of its launch.

Between 2006 - 07 Maruti sold over I lakh units in just 150 days. Alto recorded its highest ever monthly sale in October 2006 when it sold 22,294 units, this number was the highest ever achieved by any car in India in a month. Alto has caught on in popularity not only in the metros but also in the rural areas. There are many reasons why the Alto enjoys such high sales and these include lots of features such as, electronic power steering to the recently introduced iCATS, which is an OE immobilizer system that prevents theft of the car. Recent price cuts also made sure the sales were high, in the 2002-2003 period the price of the Alto was slashed by Rs 23,0001-.

The car also enjoyed the excise cut announced by the government in March 2006. The excise duty was reduced by 8 percent and the Maruti passed the complete benefit to its customers. Alto has also enjoyed success in international sales with over 140,000 units of Alto been sold internationally.
