In a country where the law draws straight lines regarding conduct, cleanliness and road safety, the smell of burning rubber, blaring exhausts, cars racing around the city streets at 300kph after dusk and that too without headlights would perhaps be considered as rather rash in this island country. Sensible or not, the Singapore night race was such a huge success that Bernie went as far as calling it a new jewel in the sport's crown. Add a flashing neon backdrop of tall buildings and cathedrals, snarling traffic in the background, packed grand stands and a steamy climate - a perfect setting for a one-of-a-kind spectacle.

Fernando Alonso scored his first win this year. An early safety car period, triggered due to Piquet Jr's accident, helped the Spaniard move up the order from 15th on the grid after a mechanical problem during qualifying. Nico Rosberg also benefited from the safety car intervention, which saw him finish second despite collecting a penalty for refuelling with the pit lane closed.

pitbox before the refuelling hose could be detached, knocking over a mechanic. He was then slapped with a drive-through penalty for the incident. The final nail in the coffin for Ferrari came as Raikkonen, who had been running in fourth, crashed out of the race with only a

few laps remaining. McLaren now leads Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship
