In the wake of the ongoing economic recession, carmakers are not only adopting defensive market strategies but are also looking at technical advancements to economize production and sales. However, add to that the stringent emission normS around the globe and the R&D expenditure increases even further. To tackle these issues, FIAT's technical arm - FIAT Powertrain Technologies (FPT) is on the verge of revealing new engines and transmissions that will spearhead their automobile operations in
the future.

The firm is pioneering a new petrol engine platform christened SuperFIRE, the next iteration of the Family B Fully Integrated Robotic Engine (FIRE). To be developed initially in a 18-litre guise, the mill will borrow its bore and stroke from the 20-litre and 1.6-litre Multijets respectively in order to displace 1742 cubic centimeters.

In its forced induction form, the engine will be mated to a direct injection and continuously variable phasing on the inlet as well as exhaust valves. Along with this engine, there will also be a diesel unit aptly called the Multijet2 The new oil burner will incorporate innovations like a Multiair camless platform which uses electro-hydraulics for valve actuation and will be mated to a next generation common-rail diesel injection system.

These technologies or the engine as a whole will trickle down to various FIAT autos and are slated to make the FIAT group the lowest C02 emitting automaker by 2012 Also under development is an all-new dual stage transmission to join the new powertrains. Currently called the Dual Dry-Clutch Transmission (DDCT), this tech will join the C635 of gearboxes which will be available in manual, auto and DDCT choices. All these technologies will debut.

I think this can lower down the car price to a large extent.
