More upmarket than most sector rivals, the Passat is stylish and distinctive thanks to discrete use of chrome for the grille. An excellent ride complements impressive body control and fine, composed handling. Cabin has excellent fit and finish with textured plastics. Not exactly a paragon of refinement, the 168bhp turbodiesel is very fuel-efficient.
