The Speed model is a swankier, even more powerful version of Bentley’s Continental GTC convertible. It gains 48 horsepower, for an output of 600, and torque rises from 479 pound-feet to a stupendous 553. The suspension is retuned and lowered, the stability-control system and steering are recalibrated to be sportier, and there are optional carbon-ceramic brakes so big they could double as coffee tables. Externally, there are cosmetic changes, while drilled aluminum pedals and sumptuous quilted leather surface inside.

Well, it certainly goes down the road with more verve than a standard GTC, with lots of grip (0.91 g on the skidpad) and a stirring exhaust note. Despite enormous 20-inch wheels and tires, it rides superbly. Our 5580-pound test car was no heavier than the last GTC we drove, and it gathered speed at an alarming rate: This Speed was quicker both to 60 mph and through the quarter-mile by 0.4 second. Stopping distance was spectacular considering the nearly three-ton heft.
