At the start of the race, Timo Scheider took the lead with Paul di Resta right behind him. However, three laps into the race, Scheider got distracted due to Katherine Legge's crash and di Resta took advantage of this distraction to take the lead. He seemed to have the edge on Scheider throughout the rest of the race, putting a comfortable distance between his Mercedes and Scheider's Audi. There was quite a bit of action going on down the order too in the form of Mattias Ekstrom and Jamie Green's final lap demolition derby. Both drivers kept making contact. trying to put each other into the gravel and Ekstrom was slapped with a 50-second penalty for initiating the contact sport.
