The first race saw rookie Ryuichi Kiyonari take a hard-won victory over Troy Bayliss. Bayliss and Noriyuki Haga looked set for another battle after Troy Corser rapidly lost touch with the flying duo. But Haga low-sided and made way for the on-fire Kiyonari. Coming through from seventh place in the initial laps, he flew past the likes of Max Biaggi and Yukio Kagayama, soon catching up with Bayliss. After that, it was a race-long sparring session in which Kiyonari came out on top, while Biaggi came in third right behind the two leaders.

In race two, Kiyonari made a poor start and dropped to fourth, while Bayliss and Haga got away at the front. But Bayliss seemed to suffer some problem and he started slipping down the order. Kiyonari got past Haga and matched his every move to win the race and make it a perfect weekend for his Ten Kate Honda. Despite finishing 11 th, Bayliss increased his lead in the championship by three points.
