In race one, it was Ryuichi Kiyonari who swept into the lead into turn one with Brit wild-card Tom Sykes behind him in second, though he was quickly swallowed by Troy Bayliss. However, on lap two, Kiyonari slid out of the lead, promoting Bayliss to first. Sykes was lapping considerably faster than Bayliss though, and he soon overtook Bayliss. However, on lap ten, Noriyuki Haga's engine gave way and spewed oil on some parts of the track which caught out many riders, which led to the race being red-flagged.

After the restart, Sykes got away though he was soon passed by Bayliss. Rain brought out the red flag again and Bayliss was declared the winner. Only 14 riders out of 33 finished the race. Race two began under treacherous conditions, but nothing could stop Kiyonari from taking the lead. Bayliss crashed out, while Cal Crutchlow rode superbly to take second place. Troy Corser hung on to third place as Leon Haslam crashed out with just two laps to go.
