THE onslaught of 'big' small cars continues. The Hyundai i20 finally has a much awaited diesel powerplant in addition to which, it also gets an automatic petrol version with a brand new engine.

The l.4-litre CRDi engine makes a maximum of 90PS at 4000rpm, with the 22lNm peak torque lasting from 1750-2750rpm. The new addition will certainly help Hyundai see a rise in the already good sales numbers of the i20.

The l.4-litre petrol automatic i20 was a surprise, through. The i20 now gets the performance along with the flash it already had, thanks to the l396cc, fourpot DOHC mill producing a class best 100PS at 5500rpm. Transmission is via a 4-speed auto 'box with an overdrive lock switch. The torque of l37Nm at 4200rpm is impressive and will make the powerful petrol a driver-friendly city car.

H S Lheem, managing director, HMIL said, "The launch of the i20 diesel is a proud moment for us especially after the immense success of i20, both in India and overseas. The i20 will also be available now with an automatic transmission, a first in the premium compact car segment. Both variants, while offering fuel economy to our customers, will also provide superior technology and best-in-class performance. The powerful l.4-litre diesel represents the ultimate in economy, safety and driving pleasure. The immaculate performance and safety features of the i20 has made it the first India produced car to meet the stringent European safety norms and it enjoys a 5-star Euro NCAP rating making it the safest car in this segment."
