The time one gets used to a Chris Bangle creation, he makes a new, more improbable one. The X1 Concept is proof. No, this is neither the duckling that will change into a swan, nor one that will grow on you. The X1 is just plain ugly. Under the skin is the 3 Series platform and at launch next year a whole slew of petrol and diesel options will be on offer.

BMW say the X1 sets the standard for 'cool elegance, modern style and variable function.' We're not buying. Let's look past the looks, shall we? BMW is bringing the SUV size and usability to the compact segment with the X1. Unfortunately, the looks are all there is for the moment. More details will come in when the production car debuts. We can only hope that the production car will look less scary.
