TATA motors has relocated the mother plant for the Nano to Sanand in Gujarat in face of the protests at Singur. In fact, the first Nano will not roll out of Singur as Ratan Tata had hoped. Instead the initial production of the world's cheapest car will be done at the company's Pune or Pantnagar units. While the company has stated that the car will be launched in the last quarter of this year, it is expected that the launch will be done in a phased manner until the plant in Gujarat is ready for production.

Company executives said that the mother unit at Sanand is likely to take at least a year to begin commercial production. The new plant and the vendor park will be located in an area of about 1100 acres and the plant will roll out 250,000 cars per annum, with an expandable capacity to make up to 500,000 cars per annum.
