This is the motorcycle I first snagged the keys of. I was sure that this would prove to be the one that surprised everyone. Everyone else just shook their heads and happily claimed the other bikes. But the engine does cause problems in this company. It's a bit slower than the rest, but more importantly, the rider has to work harder to keep up on the road. The riding position is compact, which is great for a short while, but on the highway, you feel all folded up after a few hours. The motor's smooth at 80-95kmph which means quick cruising is easy, but on the whole it's most certainly not the best at touring.

In its defence, it wasn't designed to either. But we were most surprised when we ran into clearance issues in the hill roads on our route - the Apache's centrestand is like a blind man's walking stick. It must find the ground every so often. Climbs and descents are punctuated gratuitously with the sounds of it grish-grish-grishing away. The 180 also has the lowest top speed here, which means at the same cruising pace, it's running the closest to its limits - that's a fair amount of stress to ca rry, especially counting the extra revs, gearchanges and speed that goes into catching up with the rest of this troupe.
