A subwoofer is a speaker designed to reproduce very low bass frequencies (usually those between 20 and 125 Hz). These speakers tend to be large in size (between 8 inches (20.3cm) and 15 inches (38.1cm) in diameter) and require more power to operate than their small speaker counterparts. A subwoofer is used to provide the powerful audio rumble or punch. It provides the boom in your music. Obviously. you need to choose the correct type of woofer your car.
Generally. cars with a lot of cabin area like SUVs require powerful woofers. Placement can also be a problem as with eight¬seaters there is hardly any space for installing a woofer. Saloon cars are much better off as the boot makes for a good place to install a woofer and the boot area gives the bass a nice boom. There are many kinds of woofers but the most popular ones are Sealed. Ported. Band Pass and Free Air.
A sealed woofer. as the name suggests. is a woofer that is enclosed in an airtight box. The bass that you would get from it would not be really boomy but more precise and tight. These woofers generally require more power than
others so for optimum performance it would be wise to install a good amplifier.

A Ported woofer on the other hand has little holes in the box to deliver the bass. It gives better output than a sealed box woofer. But the problem is they need to be large in order to perform which can be a problem in cars where space is at a premium.
The most popular ones are Free Air woofers mounted on a parcel tray behind the rear seat and do not require any box or enclosure to produce bass. The car's trunk acts as the box. Thus they save on space. Response though may not be as punchy as on dedicated box woofers.
The Band-Pass woofer combines the best of both worlds ie. Sealed box and Ported box. It consists of two chambers one of which is sealed and the other ported. The sound is produced through the ported side and provides maximum boom for your buck.
Each car is different and a woofer which may sound good on one car may not sound as good on another car. As always. it is essential that you have your woofers fitted by a professional installer who can guide you as to which type of woofer is suitable for your car. Along with this. a good amplifier and good quality wiring apart from proper settings can go a long way in getting the sound that you desire.
